Like Autonomous Emergency Braking on your car, Belt Arrest monitors your position and will automatically brake the treadmill if you’re not responding.

The IMPOWER treadmill also has the potential to make exercising safer. Motor-driven treadmills require the ability to stop the belt if you fall or step off. This safety requirement is meant to protect you from being forcibly ejected from the treadmill, or from experiencing further injury if you are stuck against the moving belt.

Most treadmill manufacturers implement safety measures by providing a safety lanyard – you have to clip the lanyard to your clothing, and if the lanyard is pulled because you’ve fallen or stepped away, the treadmill immediately stops. But how many people really use this mechanism? Many times, the lanyards are wrapped around the uprights or stuffed out of the way. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that emergency rooms treated 22,500 treadmill injuries in 2019, including about 2,000 kids under eight years old.

The coordinated sensor system and sophisticated algorithm used by the IMPOWER treadmill to detect your center of mass can also sense when you fall or step away, stopping the treadmill belt to protect you. This capability will augment the existing lanyard protection circuit, thereby reducing exerciser injury rates and lowering insurance costs.
